Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 chocolate cake (homemade or store-bought), cut into cubes
  • 2 cans (21 oz each) cherry pie filling or 4 cups pitted cherries in syrup
  • 3 cups whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 1/2 cup chocolate shavings or chocolate chips
  • Maraschino cherries (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare and cool a chocolate cake, or use a store-bought cake or brownies. Cut into cubes.
  2. In a trifle bowl or large glass dish, place a layer of cake cubes at the bottom.
  3. Spoon an even layer of cherry pie filling over the cake.
  4. Add a layer of whipped cream and smooth it out.
  5. Repeat layers of cake, cherries, and whipped cream until the bowl is filled, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  6. Garnish with chocolate shavings or chips and maraschino cherries.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • Best when made ahead and chilled to allow flavors to meld.
  • Use brownie chunks instead of cake for a fudgier texture.
  • Add cherry liqueur between layers for an adult version.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Serve in individual cups for elegant, single-serve options.
