Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter (for searing)
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • 2 tbsp flour or 1 tbsp cornstarch (for thickening)
  • 1 tsp fresh or dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp butter (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté until softened and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until smooth. Add thyme and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes until patties are cooked through.
  6. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Spoon gravy over the top.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and cornstarch.
  • Use baby bella or cremini mushrooms for deeper flavor.
  • Deglaze with red wine before adding broth for added richness.
  • Patties can be baked at 375°F for 25 minutes if preferred.
  • Make the patties and gravy ahead for easy reheating.
