Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Active dry yeast
  • Sugar
  • Warm water
  • Milk
  • Butter, softened
  • Salt
  • Ground beef or finely diced beef
  • Onion, finely chopped
  • Garlic, minced
  • Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Olive oil
  • Black pepper
  • Soy sauce (optional)
  • Sesame seeds (for topping)
  • Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (for garnish)
  • Egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix in milk, butter, and salt. Gradually add flour, kneading until a soft dough forms. Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  3. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a skillet. Add onion and garlic; sauté until fragrant. Add beef, cook until browned, then season with black pepper and soy sauce if using. Cool slightly.
  4. Mix the cooled beef mixture with cheddar and mozzarella cheese.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide into equal portions. Flatten each piece, add filling, and seal well.
  6. Place buns seam-side down on a baking sheet. Brush with egg wash, sprinkle sesame seeds, and let rise for another 20 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

Notes

  • Spicy filling: Add red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños to the beef mixture.
  • Vegetable addition: Stir in finely chopped mushrooms or bell peppers.
  • Herbed dough: Mix dried oregano or basil into the dough for added flavor.
  • Cheese swap: Use pepper jack or provolone for a different taste.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes or microwave briefly. Buns can also be frozen for up to 2 months; thaw and reheat before serving.
