Classic Buckeye Balls are rich, no-bake treats featuring sweet and creamy peanut butter centers dipped in smooth chocolate, leaving a small circle of peanut butter exposed on top—just like the nut of the buckeye tree. These bite-sized candies are a holiday favorite and perfect for gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or shortening (optional, for smoother dipping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together peanut butter, softened butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until a stiff dough forms. It should be firm enough to roll into balls without sticking.
  3. Roll mixture into 1-inch balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Chill the peanut butter balls in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm up.
  5. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and coconut oil (if using) in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  6. Using a toothpick, dip each peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate, leaving the top exposed to create the “buckeye” look. Let excess chocolate drip off.
  7. Place dipped balls back on the baking sheet and chill until chocolate is set, about 20–30 minutes.
  8. Remove toothpicks and smooth over the holes with your finger if desired.

Notes

  • Use high-quality chocolate for best flavor and smooth coating.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Buckeyes can also be frozen for up to 2 months—just thaw before serving.
