Classic Chicken Divan Casserole is a comforting, creamy baked dish featuring tender chicken, broccoli, and a rich cheese sauce, all topped with a golden breadcrumb crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cubed
  • 4 cups broccoli florets, steamed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Gradually whisk in chicken broth and milk, stirring constantly until smooth and thickened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Stir in sour cream, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese; stir until melted and smooth.
  5. In the prepared baking dish, layer the broccoli and chicken evenly.
  6. Pour the cheese sauce over the chicken and broccoli, spreading to cover evenly.
  7. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with 2 tablespoons melted butter and sprinkle over the top of the casserole.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  9. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken for convenience.
  • Frozen broccoli can be used—just thaw and drain well.
  • Top with extra cheese before baking for a cheesier crust.
  • Pairs well with rice or buttered egg noodles.
