Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices bread (preferably sturdy white or sourdough)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded
  • Butter for spreading

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until vegetables soften.
  3. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened.
  4. Meanwhile, butter one side of each bread slice. Place buttered side down on a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  5. Top the unbuttered side with shredded or sliced cheddar cheese. Allow cheese to melt slightly.
  6. Spoon Sloppy Joe mixture over cheese-topped bread slices, then add another bread slice on top, buttered side facing up, to form a sandwich.
  7. Grill each sandwich until bread is golden brown and crispy, and cheese is fully melted. Flip carefully to brown both sides evenly.
  8. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • Add hot sauce or finely chopped jalapeños for a spicier version.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Use mozzarella or pepper jack cheese for different flavors.
  • Add sliced pickles or coleslaw inside for extra crunch and tang.
  • Store leftovers wrapped tightly in foil or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat gently in a skillet or oven to maintain crispness.
