Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for cake)
  • 2 large eggs (for cake)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder (optional, for chocolate variation)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a Bundt or deep round cake pan.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 cup of sugar until it turns golden caramel. Quickly pour into the prepared pan, swirling to coat the bottom.
  3. In a blender, combine sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, 4 eggs, vanilla, and brewed coffee. Blend until smooth. Pour mixture over the caramel layer in the pan.
  4. In a bowl, cream butter and 1/2 cup sugar until fluffy. Beat in 2 eggs one at a time.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder if using. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, mixing until smooth.
  6. Gently pour cake batter over the flan layer. Place the pan in a larger dish and add hot water halfway up the sides for a water bath.
  7. Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
  8. Cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  9. Invert onto a serving plate. Slice and serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Add 1 tsp cinnamon to flan for warmth.
  • Use espresso for stronger coffee flavor.
  • Swap cake with chocolate mix for a mocha version.
  • Add a splash of coffee liqueur for an adult twist.
  • Use ramekins for individual servings and reduce baking time to 30–40 minutes.
