Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined (tails optional)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/4 cup honey or brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes or hot sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Optional: Green onions or sesame seeds for garnish
  • Preferred dipping sauce (sweet chili, garlic mayo, or soy-based dip)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs.
  3. Coat shrimp by dredging in flour mixture, dipping into egg, then coating again with flour mixture.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry shrimp in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  6. In a pan, combine honey (or brown sugar), soy sauce, vinegar, chili flakes, and minced garlic. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Toss fried shrimp in the glaze until evenly coated.
  8. Serve hot with dipping sauce and garnish with green onions or sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature and crispiness.
  • Air-frying or baking are lower-fat alternatives, though less crispy.
  • Adjust chili quantity to control heat level.
  • Make glaze ahead and reheat for quicker prep.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
