Classic French Toast with Syrup and Butter is a warm, comforting breakfast made from slices of bread soaked in a rich egg custard, pan-fried until golden, and served with melted butter and sweet maple syrup.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of thick bread (brioche or challah preferred)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp butter (for frying)
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Butter, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar (if using), and salt.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds on each side.
  3. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the butter.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Transfer cooked French toast to a plate. Top with a pat of butter and drizzle with maple syrup.
  6. Serve warm with optional fruit or powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for better absorption and texture.
  • Double the custard mix if using more than 4 slices of bread.
  • Add a splash of orange zest or nutmeg for extra flavor.
