Fried Okra is a crispy, golden Southern side dish made by coating fresh okra slices in seasoned cornmeal and frying until crunchy. It’s a beloved comfort food staple.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Place sliced okra in a bowl and pour buttermilk over it. Let it soak for 10 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Dredge the soaked okra in the cornmeal mixture, coating evenly.
  5. Fry the okra in batches, turning occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot as a snack or side dish.

Notes

  • Use fresh okra for best texture and flavor.
  • Maintain consistent oil temperature for even cooking.
  • Double coating the okra yields extra crunch.
  • Goes well with ranch or spicy mayo dipping sauce.
