Ingredients
Scale
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4–6 lemons)
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed
3/4 cup granulated sugar
5 cups cold water
Ice cubes, for serving
Lemon slices, for garnish (optional)
Fresh basil sprigs, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, sugar, and basil leaves. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until sugar is dissolved and basil is fragrant.
Remove from heat and let the basil syrup cool. Strain to remove the basil leaves.
In a large pitcher, combine the lemon juice and basil syrup.
Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water and stir well.
Refrigerate until chilled.
Serve over ice with optional lemon slices and basil sprigs for garnish.
Notes
Adjust sugar to taste if you prefer a sweeter or more tart lemonade.
For a fizzy version, replace some water with sparkling water.
You can muddle some basil leaves in the glass before serving for an extra punch of flavor.
