Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add molasses and egg, and mix until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough, roll into balls, then roll in granulated sugar.
  7. Place dough balls on prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 9–11 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers look slightly underbaked. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  9. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust thickness with more syrup or sugar as needed.
  10. Once cookies are completely cool, drizzle or spread glaze on top.

Notes

  • For extra maple flavor, use grade A dark maple syrup.
  • Cookies will stay soft for several days if stored in an airtight container.
  • You can freeze the cookie dough balls before baking for make-ahead convenience.
