Sausage with Gravy is a classic comfort dish featuring savory, juicy sausages served with a rich, flavorful gravy. This hearty meal is simple to prepare, satisfying to eat, and perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dinner. It pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, biscuits, or even rice.

Ingredients

  • Pork sausages (or your preferred sausage)
  • All-purpose flour
  • Butter (optional, if needed for extra fat)
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Onion powder (optional, for added depth)
  • Paprika (optional, for color and flavor)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausages until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove and keep warm.
  2. If there is less than 2 tablespoons of fat in the skillet, add butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly, until golden and smooth.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens. Season with salt, black pepper, onion powder, and paprika if using.
  4. Return the sausages to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and heat through.
  5. Serve hot over biscuits, mashed potatoes, or rice.

Notes

  • For a spicy version, use spicy sausage or add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the gravy.
  • For a creamier gravy, use a combination of milk and cream.
  • Vegetarian options can include plant-based sausages and vegetable broth with plant-based milk for the gravy.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently with a splash of milk if necessary.
