Shrimp Au Gratin is a rich and creamy seafood dish featuring tender shrimp baked in a cheesy, flavorful sauce, topped with a golden breadcrumb crust. It’s a comforting and elegant entrée perfect for special occasions or weeknight indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk and cream, stirring constantly until thickened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. Add the shrimp to the sauce and mix well to coat.
  7. Transfer the shrimp and sauce to a greased baking dish.
  8. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with olive oil and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle evenly over the shrimp mixture.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • Use raw shrimp as it will cook perfectly during baking without becoming rubbery.
  • You can substitute Gruyère or mozzarella for a different cheese flavor profile.
  • To make ahead, assemble the dish and refrigerate before baking, adding 5 extra minutes to cook time.
  • Pairs well with rice, pasta, or crusty bread.
