Rich, spiced apple butter made easy in a slow cooker—just apples, warm spices, and time for a thick, flavorful spread perfect on toast, biscuits, or as a gift.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 56 lb apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/21 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 11 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract (added at end)

Instructions

  1. Prepare apples by peeling, coring, and slicing, then add to a 5–6 quart slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, mix brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. Toss the spice mixture with the apples in the slow cooker.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 8–10 hours (or high for 5 hours), stirring occasionally, until apples are deeply softened and darkened.
  5. Add vanilla extract (if using), stir gently, then uncover and cook on low for 2 more hours to thicken.
  6. Use an immersion blender (or transfer to a blender) to puree the apple butter until smooth.
  7. If the mixture is still too loose, cook uncovered on high for an additional 30–60 minutes until it reaches a spreadable consistency.
  8. Cool slightly, then spoon into jars or airtight containers.

Notes

  • You may leave the peels on the apples for more fiber and less prep—just blend thoroughly.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste or substitute with maple syrup for a natural sweetener.
  • Substitute apple pie spice for the individual spices for convenience.
  • Stir in a splash of bourbon or rum after blending for a boozy twist.
  • Use a pressure cooker for faster results if needed.
