Old School Banana Pudding Cake is a nostalgic Southern-style dessert that layers moist vanilla cake with creamy banana pudding, fresh banana slices, whipped topping, and crushed vanilla wafers for a comforting, crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 box yellow cake mix (or homemade vanilla cake layers)
  • 3 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 package (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 1/2 cups cold milk
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping or homemade whipped cream
  • 1 cup crushed vanilla wafers
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp banana extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare and bake cake layers according to package directions or homemade recipe. Let cool completely.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together vanilla pudding mix, cold milk, and sweetened condensed milk until thickened. Stir in banana extract if using. Chill for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of pudding on top, add banana slices, then top with another cake layer. Repeat as needed depending on the number of layers.
  4. Cover the entire cake with whipped topping. Sprinkle crushed vanilla wafers over the top.
  5. Garnish with additional banana slices if desired. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

  • Use lemon juice on banana slices to prevent browning.
  • Fresh whipped cream can be used but should be stabilized if storing overnight.
  • Can be assembled in a trifle bowl as a no-fuss alternative.
  • Not suitable for freezing due to the pudding and fresh banana texture.
  • Use banana cake mix for a more intense banana flavor.
